Going from Meek to Maverick

A journey from meek to maverick . . .

Many people think marketing is only for the extroverts or the brazen.

I was quite shy and meek in school.

It wasn't until I became a consultant in my late 20s that I learned to speak up.

And it wasn't until my early 40s that I learned the power of my voice and personal brand.

This year, I turned 50 and the American Marketing Association Dallas-Fort Worth named me a winner of their 2024 Marketing Maverick Award. It was exciting and rewarding.

So if this meek kid (that couldn't even speak English, having immigrated to Canada from China) can eventually win a maverick marketing award for helping technology professionals build their brands, then anything is possible for YOU in building your brand and thought leadership.

So I want to pose a challenge to you this week to share your origin story on LinkedIn. Click here to read how I shared mine. Check out the tip below.

Content tip:

Share your origin story

The only thing that we truly own are our stories.

Telling your origin story is one of the most powerful things you can do in building your personal brand. It not only humanizes you but also gives your audience a glimpse into who you are.

Just like the story above, think about where you came from and where you are now.

  • What advice would you share?
  • What did your mistakes teach you?
  • How did you overcome the obstacles in your way?

You have something to say. And what you say matters.

You can watch a short video on how to tell your origin story at this link.

Future of Healthcare: AI, Robotics & Technology

This week, we are featuring Nayan Patel from the Tech Legacies podcast.

Nayan is the CIO at Upson Regional Medical Center and former CIO at multiple healthcare organizations including Baylor Health Care System, The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, as well as Board Member, Hospital IT Advisory at Medtronic.

Nayan shares his career advice, emphasizing the importance of having mentors and allocating time for personal growth. Here are some highlights from our chat:

  • You need to allocate 10% of your time doing something other than your role.
  • Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body.
  • I think if I could coin a phrase I would say: “It's about life/work balance, not work/life.”
  • [Healthcare is] still going to be an in-person effort, right? Because at the end of the day, it's physically taking care of somebody. So that part is going to remain the same. But what we're going to do different is trying to figure out how to use AI to our advantage.”

A little inspiration:

Lessons from sports documentaries

Athletics were never my thing. But the rigor and discipline of athletes has always fascinated me. This year, I've been studying sports documentaries and researching what athletes can teach us in the business world. Here's a few things I've learned:

  • Allocating time for recovery and rest is just as important as training time.
  • Great athletes like Patrick Mahomes and Michael Jordan not only practice more than their peers, but they also study and analyze their own plays and their competitors' plays continuously. Improvements never stop.
  • Victory is temporary. You'll continuously be tested. Enjoy the journey.

My recommendations for sports documentaries on Netflix are The Last Dance, Quarterback, Receiver, Simone Biles Rising and Formula 1 - Drive to Survive.

Pick one and binge watch it for high adrenaline inspiration and motivation!
